With the sad passing of British actor Richard Briars recently, the girls got together to reminisce about some of his starring roles. The Good Life; Ever Decreasing Circles; and the narrator in Roobarb and Custard, a list of programmes all the Scandinavian and younger girls had never heard of.
After watching an episode of The Good Life (The one where Mr Briars hits the big 40 and has his mid life crisis)), the girls decide they should become aging hippies, and be more self-sufficient for their food. They do quite well already, with Gayle and the girls out chasing Haggis through the fields, and if opportunity occurs, stealing vegetables from those same fields to make such delightful dinners (Spam list of products from Monty Python). However, "you can always do more", said Gayle, and so plans were made for a vegetable patch, and for some fruit trees in the garden.
A section of the garden was put aside for the vegetable patch, Donna was put in charge of that. She volunteered when after visiting the last country fair, she saw the vegtable growing competition, and was amazed at the size cucumbers could grow to.....oh and the marrows !!!!!
An area near the outer wall was set up for the fruit tree’s, Lau was in charge of that.
They got together in the minibus and went to the local garden centre where they spent 5 minutes looking at all the nice garden ornaments, the pixies and fairies, the love seats and even the water features. Then another 2 hours sitting drinking tea and eating buns in the coffee shop.
At five minutes to five the girls panicked, raced around the shop unable to choose and then both Maritha and Claire grabbed a sales assistant and said we’ve £300 to spend, decide what’s best and send it to us tomorrow, we need to get back to work.
And so, the next day the truck arrived with their seeds and trees. Lau had seen some nice small apple trees in the shop, but didn’t have enough time to get any. She assumed there’d be some on the truck. And there was one, but it was big. Not small like she expected, but big as in BIG. This tree was twenty foot high. The small holes she had dug in her end of the garden would not be big enough, so the girls rushed out with shovels to start enlarging one of the holes. Debbie and Colette dug like whirling dervishes until they had a six foot deep hole. So deep that they had to get help to climb back out again.
The truck reversed, some burley and not very attractive men lifted the tree up and let it slip into the newly expanded hole. Then disaster!
Remember in FTF a few months ago, we were introduced to Arthur the mole who lived in tunnels underneath Teddy Bo Towers. Well the hole that the girls dug, was right above the entrance hall to his tunnel. Several tonnes of tree hit the middle of the hole and kept on going. That twenty foot tree lost six feet due to the hole depth, and a further ten feet as it crashed through the tunnels before coming to a stop, right next to Arthur’s side table and grandfather clock (that’s been with his family for three generations (which is about 12-15 human years).
Poor Arthur almost had a heart attack. However, before he passed out on the floor, he still had enough energy to call the council to complain.
The girls filled up the hole with earth to steady the tree, and all four feet that remained above the ground. It will be interesting to see what the council has to say about this.
We'll let you know how that goes next week.
While we wait for our fruit tree to grace us with some produce, the girls have made some gorgeous cards...x
